Profile

The two buildings on Munich’s Königsplatz are among the world’s leading museums of ancient art. Here, Greek, Roman and Etruscan masterpieces can be experienced in a quality and abundance that can otherwise only be found in a few places in the world – in Berlin, Paris, London or New York.

The setting in which these unique collections are presented is also extraordinary. The classicist buildings on Königsplatz were all built on the initiative of the Bavarian King Ludwig I (1786–1868). In true antique style, all three buildings – the Glyptothek, the Antiquities Collection and the Propylaea – are richly decorated with sculptural architectural ornamentation.

A visit to the museums on Königsplatz therefore offers a unique opportunity to enjoy ancient works of art in an architectural setting that grew out of the enthusiasm for antiquity in European classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Antiquities Collections and the Glyptothek thus form the historical core of Munich’s art district.

Mission statement

Exhibitions and events shape the public perception of museums. Permanent exhibitions present a representative cross-section of the museum’s own collections. In changing special exhibitions, selected objects, sometimes supplemented by loans, are presented in ever-changing thematic contexts.

Education and outreach in various forms and for different target groups are fundamental components of museum work. However, a significant part of the original tasks of museums usually remains hidden from the public: collecting, preserving and researching. The results of the work in these areas form the basis for exhibiting and outreach.
